CDL TRAINING REQUIREMENTS FOR CLASS A AND CLASS B

At RouteReady CDL Academy, we want to ensure you’re fully informed and prepared as you begin your truck driving career. Whether you’re enrolling in our Class A or Class B CDL training programs, understanding the requirements is key to a smooth enrollment process. Below, we’ve outlined the prerequisites for both programs, highlighting common criteria as well as distinctions between the two.

  • Minimum Age Requirement

18 Years Old for intrastate driving (operating within one state). 21 Years Old for interstate driving (crossing state lines) or if you plan to transport hazardous materials.

  • Valid Driver's License

You must hold a current and valid driver’s license. This demonstrates your familiarity with basic driving principles and vehicle operation.

  • Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP)

To begin hands-on training, you’ll need to obtain a CLP from your local DMV. This involves passing a written knowledge test. Our team supports you with preparation resources to help you secure your permit with confidence.

  • DOT Medical Certification

A Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Examiner’s Certificate is required for all CDL applicants. This ensures you are physically capable of safely operating a commercial vehicle. The certificate must be obtained through a physical exam by a certified medical examiner.

  • Must Be Legally Employable in the United States

Eligibility for CDL training requires that you are legally permitted to work in the U.S. This includes providing necessary documentation to obtain CLP at the DMV.

  • English Language Proficiency

Per Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulation (FMCSR) 391.11 (b)(2), you must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English. This ensures clear communication on the road for safety and compliance.

General Requirements for Class A and Class B CDL Programs

Certain prerequisites apply to both Class A and Class B CDL training. These shared requirements ensure you’re prepared to meet industry standards and comply with federal regulations.

Specific Requirements for Class A and Class B Programs

While the core requirements are similar, the responsibilities and vehicle types associated with each license class may require additional considerations.

Class A CDL Requirements

A Class A CDL is necessary for operating larger vehicles like tractor-trailers and semis, which often require advanced skills. Before your training, ensure you’re ready to handle these combinations of vehicles and weights. If you’re unsure whether a Class A is right for your goals, our team can provide guidance.

Class B CDL Requirements

A Class B CDL applies to straight trucks, buses, and smaller commercial vehicles. These vehicles typically don’t involve trailers, which may make them more accessible for those who are new to commercial driving. If you’re focused on local or regional positions, Class B may be a better fit for your career plans.

Why Requirements Matter

Meeting these requirements ensures:

  • Federal Compliance: All students remain compliant with federal and state regulations from day one.
  • Seamless Enrollment: Avoid delays by having everything in place before starting your course.
  • Career Preparation: Proper documentation and certifications ensure you’re fully ready to succeed on and off the road.
