Starting CDL school is exciting, but it’s normal to feel a little nervous too. New environment, new skills, big trucks, and a new career path all at once. The good news? Your first week is designed to ease you in step by step.
Here’s what you can expect during your first week at RouteReady.
Day 1: Enrollment and Your CDL Permit
Your first day is all about getting officially started.
You’ll complete enrollment, paperwork, and orientation with the staff. If you don’t already have your CDL permit, you’ll head to take your permit test (or finish it if you’ve already started). Some students complete this the same day, while others finish shortly after.
This day is mostly classroom-based and administrative, so don’t worry — you won’t be climbing into a truck just yet. Think of it as laying the foundation for everything that comes next.
Day 2: Permit Testing and Online Training
If your permit isn’t finished yet, Day 2 is usually when you wrap that up.
Once that’s complete, you’ll begin your theory training. At RouteReady, students often work through online coursework that covers safety rules, basic operations, and what to expect on the road. You can usually complete this from home or in a quiet workspace.
This part may feel like school again, but it’s important. Understanding the rules of the road now makes the hands-on training much easier later.
Day 3: Your First Day on the Training Yard
This is when things start to feel real.
You’ll head out to the training yard and see the trucks up close. Instructors will introduce you to basic vehicle inspections, how to safely approach the truck, and how coupling and uncoupling a trailer works.
You won’t be expected to know everything. The goal is simple: get comfortable around the equipment and start learning the basics in a low-pressure environment.
Day 4: Learning to Back Up
Backing a truck is one of the most important skills you’ll learn as a driver, and one of the trickiest at first.
On Day 4, you’ll begin practicing straight-line backing. Instructors walk you through each step and help you understand how small steering adjustments affect the trailer.
Everyone struggles with backing at the beginning. That’s normal. With repetition, it quickly starts to click.
Day 5: More Backing Practice and Building Confidence
By Day 5, you’ll continue backing practice and reinforcing what you learned the day before.
This is where confidence begins to grow. The truck starts to feel less intimidating, and the routine becomes familiar. Many students are surprised by how much progress they make in just one week.
You’re Not Expected to Be Perfect
Your first week isn’t about mastering everything. It’s about learning the basics, getting comfortable, and building momentum.
Instructors expect beginners. Questions are encouraged. Mistakes are part of the process.
By the end of the week, most students realize: I can actually do this.
